October 2019 Newsletter

We are pleased to welcome back Dr. Todd Gray to Ipplepen. His talk on MONDAY OCTOBER 21st at the Village Hall will start at 7.30pm. Both members and non-members are welcome and there will be our usual refreshments and raffle. The theme of his talk will be ‘Exeter’s Cathedral Yard Fire and Its Ancient Buildings’.

We would like to pay our respects to John Eastley who sadly passed away in July. John was one of the founder members of the History Group in 2009 and he served the group with great distinction taking on the role of Chairman from 2012 to 2015.

Forde House
A group of over twenty of our members recently enjoyed a splendid tour of Old Forde House in Newton Abbot. Under the assured guidance of our tour host Michael Martin we were informed and entertained in equal measures. The most common reaction from tour party members was surprise that we tend to overlook or take for granted this historical gem right on our doorstep.

Professor Stephen Rippon

There was an excellent turnout at the Village Hall for Professor Rippon’s update on Ipplepen’s archaeological dig. The original excavation dates back to 2010 and a picture has emerged of continuous occupation of the site from the Iron Age right up to the 7th century AD.

LANTERNS PROCESSION

Our lanterns procession continues to go from strength to strength and is another example of the wonderful community spirit that exists in the village. Just to recap the prizes were awarded as follows.
