By the time that you receive this our annual Candlelit procession will have taken place. May I take the opportunity to pay tribute to all the people who have worked so hard to make this event a success and in particular to the efforts of Judy Dewhirst and Shirley Northwood.

Village Hall Talk
Last month there was a well-attended talk at the Village Hall to see Dr. Todd Gray deliver an erudite and lively account of Devon’s Gardens. Dr. Gray wears his knowledge lightly and his overview of land management from medieval times to the early twentieth century proved to be a visual feast taking in images of Elizabethan herb gardens,

Candlelit Procession
It seems faintly bizarre to be sending out notice of a winter candlelit procession as, at the time of writing, we are enjoying one of the warmest spells of the summer and the carnival week is in full swing. The date for this year’s candlelit procession with its attendant lanterns is Saturday 26th November and there will be much more about this nearer the time.

On Monday July 4th we enjoyed a very well attended AGM at the Village Hall. We have 53 fully paid-up members but as we continue to stress it is not necessary to be a member to attend our meetings. John Fowles
Some of you may remember the 1981 Film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ set partly in Lyme Regis starring Jeremy Irons and, in a BAFTA winning performance, Meryl Streep. The film was based on a 1969 bestselling novel by John Fowles.
What, perhaps, is less well known is that John Fowles lived for a time in Ipplepen.

Torbryan talk
On February 1st we were once again delighted to welcome Rowena Riley from the Churches Conservation Trust to the village hall to update us about the Torbryan Hidden Secrets project. Arthur French
The sad news of Arthur’s passing carries particular significance for Ipplepen’s Local History Group. He was one of our founding members and our Life President. After all who else would you turn to if you needed to know anything about the history of our village? He wrote a book about Ipplepen and there have been numerous articles over the years in this very magazine reflecting the scope and detail of his research.
