The Local History Group has been busy again with our annual Lanterns Procession. Thanks to Judy Dewhirst, Shirley Northwood and Lyndsey Kerswell for all your hard work and enthusiasm in preparing for this event.
We also had the prize-giving for the Arthur French Memorial Trophy at the primary school.

September 2017 Newsletter

St.Andrew’s 700
Preparations are well under way for next year’s 700th anniversary of St. Andrew’s church. Of course what we are commemorating is the Dedication of the Altar conducted by the Bishop of Exeter Walter Stapledon in May 1318. A Norman Church already existed on the site but the perpendicular building with which we are now all familiar today appears from this time.

AGM and Talk
We had a very good attendance last month for our AGM and talk at the Village Hall. Amongst the usual business the committee were drumming up support for our proposed trip to Morwellham Quay on Thursday September 21st. It was fifty years ago today…
Speak to anyone in the village about what has changed most over the last thirty or forty years and high on many lists will be the increase in the volume of traffic. Our narrow lanes were, of course, never designed for modern traffic and with parking spaces at a premium we are mostly resigned to the lines of parked cars stretching from one end of the village to the other.

Amongst the pleasures of running a Local History Group are the enquiries and requests that you receive asking you to follow up a particular story or lead. Some of the requests that we receive originate from as far afield as the USA, Canada and Australia whilst others are much closer to home.
